At Longtech, we manufacture standard and custom segment LCD displays for industrial instruments, meters, control panels and embedded equipment. Segment LCDs use predefined digits, letters, icons and symbols to present essential information clearly and efficiently.

What Is a Segment LCD Display?

A segment LCD display contains individually controlled segments arranged as numbers, letters, units, icons, bar graphs or other fixed symbols.

Unlike a graphic LCD, it does not generate freely changing images at the pixel level. Each visible element is defined during the LCD design process. This makes segment LCDs suitable for applications with fixed screen content, such as measurements, status indicators and operating values.

The products below include different display patterns and mechanical designs. When selecting a standard model, compare both the visible segment layout and its electrical specifications.

How Do I Choose a Segment LCD Display?

Start with the information your equipment needs to display, then check the following specifications:

  1. Display Content: Confirm the required digits, decimal points, units, icons, warning symbols and bar graphs. The segment pattern must contain every element required by your interface.
  2. Mechanical Dimensions: Compare the glass or module size, viewing area, display position, thickness and connection arrangement with your enclosure and PCB.
  3. Drive Parameters: Check the operating voltage, duty, bias, number of COM and SEG connections, pin assignment and driver requirements.
  4. Optical Configuration: Consider LCD mode, positive or negative display, polarizer type, backlight, viewing direction and ambient lighting conditions.
  5. Operating Environment: Confirm the required operating and storage temperatures, especially for industrial, outdoor or battery-powered equipment.

A similar outline size does not guarantee electrical compatibility. Always compare the segment pattern, pinout and drive conditions before replacing an existing display.

Where Are Segment LCD Displays Used?

Segment LCDs are commonly used in equipment that displays fixed numerical values, units and operating symbols.

Typical applications include utility meters, heat meters, measuring instruments, thermostats, HVAC controllers, battery chargers, scales, industrial control panels, appliances and portable electronic equipment.

They are especially suitable when the displayed information is clearly defined and does not require menus, detailed graphics or freely changing text.
